Character (Original Universe)
Name: Kyo Sohma
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Canon: Fruits Basket
Canon Point: Chapter 89
History: Wikia with a stardard Wiki, plus some written.

[ During Summer Vacation ]

The Sohma family and Tohru are spending time at the beach. Kyo originally didn't want to go into the ocean, but when he saw Tohru struggling in the water, he met up with her on a rock and handed her a floatation device. Eventually the group (consisting of Tohru, Kyo, Yuki, Haru, and Momiji) were in involved in water activities (though Kyo not so much.) The sun got to Yuki, putting him down for the count. Kyo went to bed early too out of spite.

The next day the group (now with Hiro) went out for a walk near the summer home. Hiro carelessly mentioned about how she always speaks of her mom and never her dad. The comment upset Tohru, and it was easy for Kyo to tell she wasn't being herself. After their walk, they were back at the beach again, where the group wanted to smash watermelons in celebration for Hiro's incoming baby sibling. Tohru was about to slip on speaking about her mother and withheld it. Soon after Kyo approached her about it saying that it bothers him when she doesn't speak her mind, and the two got into the discussion of parents (thought Kyo's wasn't very light.) The confession did lift Tohru's spirit.

Akito finally arrives at the summer home, meaning that the relatives had to leave to see him. All except for Kyo of course, which was better because it meant he got to stay behind with Tohru. The two prepared food for when the rest of the family came back, but it wasn't until really late that they did. Worried, Tohru left Kyo to search for them.

The next morning, Tohru was out of it and didn't look very well. Tohru insisted she was fine, and then said she wanted to play in the sand. Kyo complied with such and went out to pass the time with her.
Kyo later found out that Akito, for once, wanted to see him. Yuki made it perfectly clear to Kyo that he didn't want him screwing up in any way that might jeapordize Tohru's safety.
The two resumed messing around in the sand before the topic of his beads came up. He mentioned that they are made of human bones, and apparently stained with blood. The conversation boiled out not to be so dark before a wave splashed them and Kyo insisted he was going to kill the ocean.

Tohru was happy that Kyo was finally invited because the cat is never invited. While Kyo wasn't as excited, he expressed so. In reality, he was frustrated that Tohru would be left alone again (much like New Years) and that him seeing Akito can't mean anything good, and it didn't. Initially, all their exchange Kyo was promptly remind that he killed his mother. Everything was his fault, he was a monster that didn't deserve happiness, and who could ever love a monster like him. Then Akito starting verbally attacking Tohru, saying she was also a monster. Kyo was okay when the hostility was directed at him, but not at her. He, at first, resisted Akito but learned he cannot defy Akito. Instead of fighting back, Kyo chose to take it and admitted he could never fall in love. In the end, Akito (at surface level) got what he wanted. Kyo, once again, admitted to himself he loved her.
After the bad run in with Akito, Kyo returned immediately back to Tohru. He was happy to see her again and decided he wanted to spend his remaining time being near her.

Kyo had a deep conversation with Momiji regarding Kyo and how he wondered why they were leaving Tohru hanging to go see Akito. He learned that they all just trying to protect her from Akito. Momiji claimed he wasn't from the beginning, but that he still wants to build memories with her, and that makes him selfish. Kyo also admitted to being selfish. By the end of the day, the group decided to set off small fireworks/crackers.

[ After Summer Vacation ]

Everyone is back in school.

Tohru had arranged to meet Kazuma to discuss things with him, and when the high school gang caught wind that she had plans, they were jumping to conclusions that she had a date. Of course this wasn't true, and they were teasing her badly. Kyo asked out of curiosity and when he could tell she was telling the truth, he told them to knock it off.

Later Kyo had a date that he couldn't get out of because Kagura guilted him into it. The two went to where they first met within the Sohma compounds. Kagura came clean about how she was just using Kyo at the start and how he made her life seem better. Things were all good and fine until she found out about his true form and could never see him in the same light. She began to force herself on him to try and compensate but it was never the same. While Kyo would never love her, when she broke out into tears over all, he stayed to keep her comforted until she stopped crying.

Tohru's grandpa threw out his back, and thus was bedridden, out of concern Tohru when to go visit him to see how he was doing. Soon after, shortly after she just left, Kyo found her collapsed and silently crying when he went to go pick her up. She made a silly comment about how he surprised her and that he must have fell from the heavens. He reassured her it was okay to feel that way when family was in poor health. The two began to walk back.

Sometime after Parent-Teacher conferences ensue, the school group heads to Kyoto for a school field trip. It is here where Kyo turns down an admirer and foolishly pushed Tohru away in the same fashion when they first met. There was a mini reconcile when she chased after him, allowing him to catch her hand in hand. Kyo and Tohru had made a type of amends before the end of trip.

The school culture festival is around the corner, and their class drew a school play. The play that was drawn was Cinderella. At first Kyo didn't attend any of the rehearsals due to the fact that he spotted the role for prince charming, which didn't suit his style. Tohru had been rigged into playing the role of one of the evil step-sisters, but was unable to pretend to be evil. Hanajima, otherwise known as Wave Girl, was Cinderella. Because hardly any of the main cast fit the characters they were voted into, the script writer was cornered into rewriting the script to better suit their personalities. Part way through most of it became improvised, and everyone began to bleed into the roles. The play had ended with part of the main stifling their true feelings.

Personality:
While it is true that Kyo was short-tempered, and rude, he was not always like that. It was something that developed over the years as a means to protect himself from others and prevent him from unnecessarily forming bonds that might later hurt him and others. Kyo was never good at maintaining his relationships. His relationship with his mother was particularly bad because even though she said she loved him and wanted to protect him from the world, in the end those were empty words and Kyo knew it. His existence was a burden, it was too much for her. She eventually snapped and committed suicide. He was told that it was his fault she died, and that he was the one who killed her. He drove her to suicide. His father constantly blamed him for it, and referred to him as a monster. His father never considered him more than that, and repeatedly calls him a thing. It wasn't until Kazuma took him in, that Kyo started to form a healthy relationship. Kazuma was the first one to show him the "outside" and share with him happy memories that didn't involve violence, and didn't involve blame. Kazuma cared for him, and loved him like a parent would any child. In fact, Kyo wishes that Kazuma were his real father, and he wants to tell him that. Firstly, Kyo wants to earn that right, to be worthy enough to do so, and in order to do that he has to better himself. He made a vow to himself that he would change. And change, Kyo did! Just like he intended, he no longer yells at every little thing. He doesn't get mad as easily. Kazuma even pointed out that he has risen from despair (where he was a year ago) and is starting to move forward. To grow.

Not all of his triggers have subsided. Kyo is still quick to blow up when Shigure says something lewd and perverted, namely toward Tohru. Or when Yuki provokes him. He hasn't stopped yelling altogether, he has simply narrowed it to things that bother him the most. He still gets mad and frustrated, but unless it involves the former, he is usually able to come down from it. Sometimes, even when provoked he won't yell and overreact like he use to, instead he tries to contain his feelings and act normally.

Kyo use to shut himself off from the world, using his hatred of Yuki as his greatest tool. This traces back to when he made a deal with Akito about beating Yuki in a fight (even though he would never be able to.) Akito promised him that if he were able to defeat Yuki, he would be free. He tried, and he tried, even though deep down he knew he would never win. Originally he was afraid of the lukewarm feeling he was getting from living in Shigure's house with Yuki, Tohru, and Shigure because he knew it would heal him. Kyo was afraid of losing Tohru if she were to find out about his true form. His true form (the vengeful spirit of the cat,) is something that causes him a lot of pain, and disgust. Kyo loathed his true form, and he loathed himself. He thought himself sickening, and disgusting. All words he's heard from others about his true form. A form no one can love. He at one point accepted that his life was worthless and that it was all the rat's fault.

Along with his true form, are other qualities he might not have had if he were born into a normal life. Kyo doesn't like water all that much. Not as a body, and not when it falls from the sky. In reality, when it rains, he often finds himself under the weather and more irritable than usual. He's lethargic and doesn't want to do anything. He often only acts out when provoked with his increased irritability. Kyo never wants to play in pools, lakes, or oceans. Because the spirit of the cat doesn't like water, and neither does he. His likes that are similar to a cat's involve loitering in high places, like the top of the school or on the roof. As well as having a strong fondness for milk and fish.

Kyo has never physically attacked a woman, even when she might have deserved it for throwing a punch at him or baiting him to strike. Even during his violent days when he was still short-tempered, the worst he would ever do to Uo (usually the girl who provoked him) was call her Yankee and challenge her to competitive things that didn't involve sparring. He respected women to some degree, in a sense that he would never exploit them (such as take advantage of them or expose them.) He would never purposely harm them, physically. Sometimes he would with his outbursts, but it was never intentional. Save for Kagura, who was the worst about forcing herself on him, the most he would is make a break for it and avoid contact altogether.

Kyo is undoubtedly a martial artist, due to Kazuma's teaching. He wasn't good at first, but has greatly improved over the years. It's still a passion that means a lot to him, to the point where he would one day like to inherit Kazuma's dojo (but at his current canon point, this is unlikely.) He currently visit's Kazuma three days a week at the dojo for martial arts training to maintain and improve his skills. Aside from using it to channel his anger, it was also a bonding tool that the two used which eventually led them to be as close as they are.

Being the cat, Kyo was never invited to any of the zodiac gatherings and was treated as an outcast. He was ostracized and ridiculed for being born the way he was. Isolated from the outside world, and come graduation, is doomed to spend the rest of his life in a dark room separated from others. Even the other Sohma. Kyo knows this is his fate and is under the impression that he can't do anything about it. Kyo hates being asked about what he'll do in the future after he graduates because of how touchy the subject is for him. He thinks there's nothing he can do to change it, and instead of dwelling over the lack of a future, is spending what time he has to live to the fullest. He wants his final moments to be his best.

While he doesn't fight Yuki as often as he use to, he is still competitive with him. Kyo get's just as fired up at the idea of winning a competition against the rat. For example, during the summer home vacation when Kyo didn't want to compete in the water with Haru; Haru asked if Yuki wanted to join because he would be more into it. Kyo stated he wasn't that simple, but as soon as Yuki agreed, his attitude did a complete 180. It's been mentioned by others that they don't physically fight as often as they use to. His current point makes no mention if they still argue as much as they use to, but Kyo doesn't snap at every little thing anymore so it's safe to assume the arguing has at least reduced to something less frequent.

Kyo is superstitious, and believes in parts of the supernatural like fortune telling and ghosts. In one example, during a special in the manga, Kyo asks Hanajima if it's in his fortune whether or not he'll be Yuki. When she turns away without replying, he takes it as a bad fortune and freaked out about it. Meanwhile Yuki comments, "You're very superstitious aren't you?" In another example when the group visited Kyoko (Tohru's mom) grave, he asked Hanajima if she saw ghosts.

At first Kyo didn't take kindly to Tohru hanging around him, it didn't take long for him to come around and try to accept her. Of course it took the aid of others to point out just how insensitive he was to her and how he might have hurt her feelings. Kyo's apology, even when interrupted by Shigure, was a meaningful one. Before he knew it, he started to care for her, and he started to worry for her. "I don't know why the hell I'm doing this. Why did I get all irritated the moment you left? It didn't make any sense, so I got even more annoyed!" At the time he didn't understand his own feelings for her. Early on, Kyo knew how selfless she was and how self-sacrificing she could be. He began to insist for her to speak her mind and what she felt. If something bother her, she should state it for other's to know. She never really did, which left Kyo to do it for her. Uo even mentioned that it seems like Kyo was taking care of Tohru. He's always looking out for her, like when she overworked herself to the point of exhaustion and later fell ill because of it. Knowing she couldn't make a meal for herself, he made one for her. He's incredibly protective of her. They've bonded to an extent where they now share their problems with each other, without holding it in. Kyo won't always do this, unless she asks him, but he no longer hides it from her.

Likewise, if he feels like something is bothering her, he asks what's wrong. This lives up to Kazuma's statement: "Whether your coming to live with that girl…is a coincidence or an inevitability…it has a healing effect on you." Kyo is no longer angry all the time, and doesn't scowl at everything. He's generally kind-hearted and thoughtful around her. His expression is soft and he's sincere when he's around her. Tohru, after Kazuma, has been the biggest impact in his life. She has stuck by him, even during his darkest hour while in his true form. Her accepting him, and all of his bad saved him. He's okay with her being scared and not loving that that side of him because it's proof that she saw his ugliness. His perception is that other's don't have to love everything about him. All he really wants it to be together with Tohru. It was words he thought he would never hear, and yet, he did from the one person he was afraid of chasing away. It was during this development that he made it a point to care for her.

He's one of the few people who can tell when Tohru isn't her usual cheery self. For example, when Hiro rudely imposed on her feelings of always talking about her mom, she had made it a point to reconsider how often she mentioned her and carried herself differently because of it. Kyo knew it wasn't like her to be the way she was acting, and later approached her about it. He doesn't always do things he wants, but he does them anyway to make Tohru happy because he likes it best when she is happy. Normally he would never consider playing in the sand by the beach, but because Tohru asked, he did so anyway. He's realized his feelings for Tohru. He doesn't just want to be together with her, he loves her. He loves her so much! It still baffles him, how she can bother being around someone like him. Despite what little time he has left, he wants to be near her until the end.

If you feel like there's anything I can do to improve the way I portray Kyo, feel free to let me know here. He's taken from chapter 70 sometime after the events held at the summer house to give you an idea of where his development is.

[IC]

Hugging this character: Omg yes!! YES! Hug him like no tomorrow!
Kissing this character: Go for it! His reaction will just be more extreme than the first.
Flirting with this character: If you want, he's not going to be interested though.
Fighting with this character: By all means, fight the cat!
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Sure, with or without plotting, he's reckless. It's bound to happen.
Killing this character: This will require plotting and probably permission depending on the means.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Sure. xD

Warnings:

If he's hugged by a girl, he will turn into a cat.

Kyo's true form is grotesque, vile, and terrifying. It's something no one in the series can like, or love, and they are generally scared of him when in this form. He himself hates his true form. It's described to smell like rotting flesh, and is ugly.
